Tearing It All Down

9 Sep ’15

My neighbor Joe lived here for at least ten years. He was a good guy, raising his two granddaughters. When he found out he was evicted he talked about moving back to Kentucky to be near his mother. The developers kept moving out the eviction date.

One day this summer they were just gone. I guess we were out camping and I never got to say goodbye or wish him well.

These three units of Section 8 housing are being replaced with five single-family homes that will tower four stories and will likely go on the market for $700,000. They will never be good for families with young children or old people. They won’t have stoops, or yards, or even face the street, so we’ll never see the people that live there.

When people talk about losing the city they love, this is it for me. It is getting harder and harder to live in a city that is losing its heart, which in turn makes it harder to keep caring.
