A Look at Crater Lake: HDR

17 Sep ’08

For the past week and a half, we’ve been on a road trip. We’re still out there, alternating camping and hotels, site-seeing with sitting around reading books and surfing the net.

In addition to reading, I’ve also been continuing to learn Aperture, though it is admittedly not much fun on the small screen of the MacBook. Vic and I have also continued to take bracketed photos to play around with High Dynamic Range.

While, I’d admit I’ve plenty to learn about the process, on this second serious attempt to use Photomatix, I’m not too pleased with the results. Perhaps, I’m mis-thinking the subject? Crater Lake at sunrise is incredible enough without extra processing, and I think my normal post-processing (upcoming) would be more than enough to capture this particular Monday morning. The process put a strange halo around the trees (like poor sky alterations), and though I do like the pushing forward of the foreground cliffs, their color is off. I am not quite sure how to fix it. The lake, however, is really that blue.

We’re poking north now through Central Oregon. It’s hot.
