I don’t follow the racers too much, spending more time tracing maps for my own adventures. After being mocked by not one, but two people last week on my pokey Feburary pace anti-setting, it would probably be a decent inspiration to go see how the pros really do it.
BRUSSELS (AFP) – World road race champion Tom Boonen of Belgium will wear a gold and diamond-studded helmet on the roads of Europe this season, according to the Belga news agency.
Boonen, who rides for Quick Step, will wear the Laser-made helmet for the first time on Sunday at the opening stage of the tour of Andalucia in Spain.
The helmet, which is worth an estimated 7,000 euros, is coloured in the same rainbow style as the world champion jersey Boonen will wear this season but it is also decorated with gold and a single two-carat diamond.
The bike goes to pay a visit next week to Sammamish Valley Cycles. The STI shifter that snapped off in Cape Breton will get fixed, they’ll look at the squeeky freewheel, and retrue the wheels. I’m wearing the World Champ jersey for the ride out there when I drop it off, though keeping my same old sun-bleached helmet.
See, I’ve taken a bit of interest in Tom Boonen. Despite him being Belgian, a bit tasteless, and having retirement plans, I find him… well, mi-ti-fine! I really can’t stop reading about him. Here’s some more pics of him in winning the tour of Quatar, winning the Worlds, and one you don’t have to click on: this is what it looks like when you are young, a champion and too hot.

I never mocked you! I’m offering words of encouragement and support.
Also, Boonen: A++ would view again.

What, no diamond?
I was telling a friend of mine about Tom’s helmet and she was sure that I meant it was diamond encrusted and she couldn’t figure out how that would be good for racing.
Well there you have it. Make a post on a hottie, and people step out of the intenet to send you photos.
Here’s a few that came my way today. I’m not sure who has the copyright on them, but word on the street is that if you hit tdwsport.com, you can look at fellows in lycra until your heart busts.
I volunteered as bartender at a WABA Silent Auction here in DC
it was black tie
a gathering of all sorts from the bicycle culture
it was an unusual night with fast falling snow in a town that can be crippled by a dusting
I drove rather than riding
towards the end of the event one of my friends at WABA, Maggie askied that I driver her sister home
her sister was in from out of town with her husband
her husband was from Belgium and was proud to tell me that he worked for Quick Step
as I do not follow racing (road or mountain.. or cross for that matter)
I did not know who Quick Step or their key players were
but
the names are more familiar now
