Ho! Ho! Ho! As far as the commercialization of Christmas goes, I scored! My first wool jersey, oh boy!
It’s a duplicate of Eddy Merckx‘s Molteni jersey and that white will undoubtedly look smashing on me mid-summer with a bit of cycling tan.
Though there is a slight problem: I look like an uncooked bratwurst in it.
Jerseys tend to run small. While the shoulders seem tight and right, the belly is more “Fat Eddy” than “Fast Eddy”. Oh the cruelness of Belgian beer! I already have one jersey I only get to wear in August and September, so it seems like returning it would be prudent and I could use it now. However, hanging it like art on the bedroom wall seems like the best inspiration for dieting and the indoor trainer ever devised, even better than looking at my too-tight blue jeans.
Oh, I can’t wait to try it out! It is swell.

I just happened on your blog and am cracking up about your bratwurst jersey. I was given an incredibly stylish, beautiful shirt that is “one size fits all”. Meaning, it is made of spandex, soemthing an italian model would wear, with cool ribbing patterns in it. At first I wasnt sure about it, I had visions of looking like a blue seal in it. But I put it on and wow, I look like an italian model…except for the blonde hair. Good thing I lost weight recently. One size fits all means, if you are bigger than a size 6, dont even try it. Be grateful you are a man. Finding a proper bra for a skintight shirt (I am a woman) is really a tedious thing. I did it though. It was like figuring out a science experiment or something. Enjoy your wool jersey. If you are in Boston (I couldnt figure your exact whereabouts), then you will need it!
I never go near the beach in my Lycra as I am deathly afraid of a killer whale mistaking me for a seal and wisking me out to see to have me for lunch. I am sure that I would taste similar with the blubber around my midriff.
I am in Boston currently. Yep, this wool jersey is going to rule, though right now, I am just out on my one-speed in my eskimo coat. What I am most curious about is what it will be like to wear in the summer. Supposedly they breathe quite well.
I realize that we are now four years after you received this jersey, but how did it work out for you? I’m considering buying that same jersey. How was the fit compared to the sizing chart?
By the way, I love your website! I’m also curious to know how the Mason bees worked out for you. I’ll post a comment on that blog entry so that the question is relevant.
Thanks!
Steve
The moths got it before I ever lost weight to look good in it!
Truth be told, it was scratchy, though I have since learned that many people will wear a base layer under to maintain better body temperature control.
In wool, I am very much liking my smart, albeit expensive, Rapha jersey’s. The short-sleeve on is stellar, the long-sleeve mid-season weight one (thinking it would be perfect for Seattle) is so-so, often too hot and sometimes not warm enough.
Thanks for the tip. I decided to go with the black, lightweight Rapha jersey. It should be arriving tomorrow.
Oh, I’d be interested to hear how you like that. Isn’t the lightweight one only part wool?
Had my first ride with it today. The fit is unbelievably good. Feels like it was custom tailored. However, today’s 45-mile club ride was not supposed to be this cold. Low 30s, snow flurries, 5 to 10 mph winds. Not the best day for a lightweight jersey. But I got the arm warmers too, and that helped. Those are also very nice. I’m liking the look very much. You’re right, the lightweight jersey is 25% wool, 75% poly. I can see it working real well in the summertime.
I also am fairly amazed at how nicely the Rapha jersey’s fit. They feel great, even on a big fatso like me…I can imagine for a true bike boy they’d be simply divine. I am working much, much harder this year to get to “riding weight”..and boy howdy when I do, I am prying money from my husband for another couple new jerseys. I am definitely curious to try one of the light-weight ones.
I am planning on writing up a review of my experience with Rapha gear when I get back from Israel and get maybe one more month of riding with what I have, so keep your eye out for that!
Cheers!
