Independence Day in Boston

5 Jul ’05

A half a million people line the banks of the Charles Basin to watch the fireworks and listen to the Boston Pops blare through Sousa. This year’s Boston show was sponsored by Liberty Mutual Insurance, proving that marketing on people’s fear of “losing it all” and death, nickle and diming claims, and having large banks of call center folks making minimum wage is so profitable that for 20 minutes you can just burn the sky.

Honestly, instead of worrying about the militaristic display and bread and circus aspect of this, I enjoyed myself. It’s hard not to: a lovely warm night, a bit of Sousa, good friends, and a lively crowd intent on having fun. I spent the time playing with a camera Pablo lent me for this summer’s trip up north. With a tripod I think I could get decent shots of the night sky. As it is, I like some of these abstract blurs. Vic had the good idea of a tripod mount somewhere on the bike. It is something worth looking into.

Boston is great for the 4th of July
